In 1956 Lady Susana Walton, wife of the English composer Sir William Walton, began to nurture this spectacular subtropical and Mediterranean garden, which is called La Mortella because of the myrtle bushes, Myrtus communis, that grew among the rocks and the wild vegetation.
At first, the land she and her husband bought was a pile of volcanic rocks but fortunately the famous garden designer, Russell Page, transformed Susana’s vision into reality and helped her tame the land. The gardens are so beautiful and unusual because William brought back many different plants from his travels all over the world: Oceania, the Americas, Asia and Europe.
In 1991 the Gardens were opened to the public, so now you can visit this magical place, where you can cool off in the shade of the thousands of different plants, and really feel the love that permeates every single flower bed.
You can reach the Mortella Gardens by taxi from your hotel, accommodation or directly from one of the ports of Ischia. Just contact us in advance and we will pick you up at the time you prefer.
